UNWTO General Assembly: A Marrakesh event to think about tourism in the post-Covid era
Preparations are well underway for the 24th session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which will be held for the first time in our country, in Marrakesh, during the 4th quarter of 2021.
To this end, the Minister of Tourism, Crafts, Air Transport and Social Economy has just held a working session with the Secretary General of this organization, Zurab Pololikashvili, who is making his first official visit to Morocco in as a manager at the UNWTO.
In preparation for the holding of this event, Nadia Fettah announced that she had “proceeded with Mr. Pololikashvili to the co-signature of a letter of intent which confirms the commitment of the Kingdom of Morocco and the UNWTO regarding the organization of this world event ”.
For her, this signature gives a strong signal and a message of hope to the international tourism community and to Moroccan tourism operators in particular, especially since it coincides with the start of vaccination campaigns around the world. The official, who welcomes the occasion of the launch of the vaccination campaign in Morocco, one of the first countries in Africa, under the royal impulse, also does not fail to express herself on the pride of the Kingdom to bring together the great family of tourism in Marrakesh.
And that’s not all. This working session held between the UNWTO delegation and its Moroccan counterpart was also an opportunity to discuss the state of the tourism sector in Morocco and in the world in the context marked by the Covid-19 crisis. Ms. Fettah also highlighted Morocco’s active contribution to the organization’s initiatives relating to training and education, including the work of the UNWTO Committee for online training in the tourism sector. “. Morocco is already, alongside Kenya, a member representing the African continent, within this committee, given its important role in hotel and tourism training. All this while recalling, during this working session, Morocco’s commitment to guarantee the success of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly.
For his part, the Secretary General of the UNWTO, who highlights the privileged relations of cooperation between the Kingdom of Morocco and the UNWTO in the tourism sector, indicates that “the next UNWTO General Assembly that will host Morocco in 2021 will be historic and that the UNWTO will spare no effort to make it one of the most successful post-pandemic events ”.
In this sense, Mr. Pololikashvili specifies that the Marrakesh meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the future of the tourism sector hard hit by the health crisis and that the member states of the organization and representatives of the private sector will be invited to answer it present. “Morocco is an excellent destination to promote and a model in the tourism sector,” he added, highlighting the Kingdom’s great experience in the field of tourism. As a reminder, Morocco was elected during the 22nd session of the said assembly held in September 2019 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, with a total of 74 votes against respectively 17 and 11 for Kenya and the Philippines.
Morocco, a founding member of the Organization, has sat on its Executive Council on several occasions. He is also a member of several Technical Committees and Working Groups of this organization.
